Feb. 2023 Newsletter

Hello Newtists,

We are half way through another wet and soggy winter but we’ve been busy working at Big Creek and have a new section of trail to open this spring. Our next Big Creek workday is Sunday March 5. Meet at the Big Creek Trailhead at 10am, it’s about 1.5 miles up Big Creek Reservoir road. We will continue work on a new trail, Middle Earth. Come out and enjoy a day in the dirt! No experience or tools required.

Dust off those bowling shoes and polish your balls because we’re going bowling at Muggly’s in Toledo for this month’s social.  As usual we meet on the last Wednesday of the month, Feb. 22nd, at 6pm. Come bowl a few games or just hangout and heckle. Check out Muggly’s bowling prices and shoe rental here https://mugglysbowling.com/bowling.html

If you have not already done so please consider renewing your membership for 2023. Memberships are a way for us to raise money for things such as liability insurance, hand and power tools, fuel for equipment, and our website. A strong member base demonstrates to the city, state, and granting organizations enthusiasm for and commitment to building and maintaining recreation trails in the region. Please consider supporting the work we are doing on the mid-coast. Annual memberships are $40 for an individual and $60 for a family. Memberships are available on our website here https://newportnewts.org/membership.

Spring is just around the corner and with it comes the annual Coast Hills Classic mountain bike race at Wilder. We will be scheduling several workdays to get the trail in shape for this year’s race on April 30.  Watch our Facebook events or website https://newportnewts.org/calender  for dates and times.

We would like to thank the Seafood and Wine Festival for giving us the opportunity to volunteer and raise money for the NEWTS. Several of us will be working parking during the event, stop by and say hi.

Also, please respect our neighbors in WIlder, Yakona Nature Preserve. That area is off limits to bikes and is clearly signed.  The off limits section is highlighted on Trailforks https://www.trailforks.com/region/newport-1519061887/?activitytype=1&z=13.8&lat=44.59572&lon=-124.04066 . You can learn more about the Yakona Nature Preserve here https://www.yakonaoregon.org/visit
